FAQs
How often do I have to test my generator? And how do I know if things are working properly?
The generator has a built in exerciser/self diagnostic that automatically runs the system every week at a predetermined time. This keeps the generator in top working condition and it will also inform you if there were any problems. Most models have an LED panel on the control panel of the unit that flash when the unit fails to start.
How long does it take to install a generator?
I asked this question and was told by Kelley Brothers that almost all of their installations take just one day. Jobs requiring any underground trenching may take an additional day as the trench can not be back filled until after the mechanical and/or electrical inspection has passed.
Does Kelley Brothers install their generators or use subcontractors?
Kelley Brothers use their own personnel to ensure the quality and workmanship of every installation. They send a licensed electrician and a pipe fitter to every job.
Will a generator protect me from brown outs?
Yes. Depending on the equipment you have installed, most transfer switches are set to detect a +/- 10% drop in utility voltage and will transfer to generator power when that occurs. So when your area is experiencing brown-outs, your home will be powered by your generator, not the local utility. Also, your transfer switch will not transfer you back to utility until quality power (100%) is detected for more than seven minutes.
I’m tired of losing power in my home. We have medical equipment that must be powered all the time. What can I do to protect my family? Who can I call?
Great question and I know of your concern. One of the best things anyone can do to protect themselves is to purchase an automatic standby generator. These generators are fully automatic and permanently installed outside your home, much like your air conditioning unit. They are wired to your home electrical panel and piped directly to your gas source (either Natural Gas or LP). You have no switches to flip and no tanks to fill. Because they are so affordable and a lifesaver, I recommend that you contact Kelley Brothers.
Kelley Brothers installs all the major brands of generators on the market and have installed more generators in the state of Michigan than any other electrical contractor.
What kind of a warranty should a generator come with?
The warranty on an automatic standby generator is supplied by the Manufacturer, and is specific to the different makes and models offered by each manufacturer. But most are between 2 and 5 years.
How loud are these automatic standby generators? My neighbors use a portable and I can barely tolerate that noise.
The generators that are sold by Kelley Brothers are some of the quietest in the industry, between 62-74 dba, which is about half as loud as a gasoline powered portable generator. If noise is an issue for you or your community be sure to mention that when you contact Kelley Brothers.
What size generator do I need to run my house?
The first thing to consider is what do YOU want to power during an outage? Many people require only basic appliances such as furnace, refrigerator/freezer, sump pump, and some outlets for lighting. For others items such as security system, garage door opener, computer, a/c, or even a hot tub would be considered a necessity. Kelley Brothers provides free in-home estimates to determine your electrical needs and will size the generator to your unique application.
Is there a lot of work required to own a standby generator?
These fully automatic generators do not require any work on your part to start up and power your home in the absence of utility power. But they do require annual maintenance (oil change, filters, belt check, etc…) to keep them in top operating condition. Kelley Brothers can provide you information for factory authorized service providers in your area that they work with exclusively.
Will my stove work during a power outage if I have a standby generator?
A gas stove will work in a power outage, the important thing to consider is the total amount of gas being used in the home when the generator is running and make sure that your gas meter is large enough to accommodate the necessary flow. When you call Kelley Brothers for their free in-home estimate, they will determine if your gas meter is large enough to handle the additional load of the generator. If not, they can provide you information to assist you in getting in contact with your gas utility to have your meter upgraded. Or if you prefer they can include a meter upgrade in the installation proposal and their staff would make all the necessary calls for you. |
