Tax Credits for 2011
The Federal Energy Tax Credit for 2011 applies to Building Envelope Improvements. Owners of existing homes may receive a tax credit worth 10% of the cost of upgrading the efficiency of the building's envelope. Installation (labor) costs are not included and the credit is capped at $500 for all improvements. To be eligible for the credit, the improvement must meet the prescriptive requirements established for it under the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (including supplements). The following improvements are eligible for the tax credit:
From January 1 through December 31, 2011: Natural gas & propane furnaces must meet an Annual Fuel Use Efficiency (AFUE) 95 or higher, oil furnaces and gas, oil and propane boilers must meet an AFUE of 95 or better. In addition, the credit only covers costs up to $150
Until December 31, 2011: The credit only covers costs up to $300 on central air conditioning units and air-source heat pumps must meet the highest tier standards set by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) as of February 17, 2009, which in most cases requires a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 16. SEER measures performance throughout the cooling season.

Consumer Energy Rebates
Take advantage of the rebate incentives for 2011 and save
energy year-round. According to ENERGY STAR®
you could save
about $200 a year when replacing your heating and cooling equipment with high
efficiency units. With heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)
accounting for 50 percent of your total energy use, switching to energy
efficient components can lower your bill and still keep you comfortable all
year.
Consumers Energy has valuable rebates on energy efficient
air conditioners and furnaces that can make your purchase more affordable. If
your system has reached its rated lifetime, usually between 10 and 15 years,
use our rebates to upgrade to high-efficiency equipment. It will give you a
striking difference in energy costs.

Consumers Energy. This program covers products purchased and installed on or
